National Institutes of Health or NIH is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The National Institutes of Health is also responsible for biomedical and health-related research that is done in USA. The main objective of this institute is to improve the general well being of all the people of the United States.

National Institutes of Health carries lots of biomedical research and collects funds for the same. The NIH is divided into 2 parts. The “Extramural” parts are responsible for the funding of biomedical research outside of NIH, while the “Intramural” parts of the National Institutes of Health conduct research. The various institutes of NIH are located in different regions of USA. 

For instance, the National Institute of Aging and the National Institute on Drug Abuse are situated in Baltimore and Maryland. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is set up in the Research Triangle of North Carolina.

The goal of NIH research is to acquire more knowledge to help prevent any disease and to detect, diagnose, and treat all kinds of diseases and disabilities. Its mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to a better health for everyone. To attain its goal, the National Institutes of Health or NIH conducts various researches in its own laboratories, support the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals and research institutions throughout the country and abroad. National Institutes of Health also helps in the training of research investigators and provide necessary medical information to the researchers.
